The history of UEFA European Championship

The UEFA European Championship has become one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. Over the years, the league has become a major European continental competition that is contested by senior men's teams and recognised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). In 1960 the first league event took place and thereafter occurred every four years, alongside with the World Cup.

In the past the UEFA Euro began with eight teams and only four teams qualifying for the tournament. It then was extended to 16 in 1996. As the Football associations increased in Europe and presently the number of teams were increased to 24.

Qualifying teams are selected by the UEFA Committee using seeding. This is a process whereby the teams and players are grouped ensuring that the top teams play later in the competition. Teams then either qualify for the final tournament or to further playoffs depending on their position in the group. The teams are later ranked by dividing the number of points won and the number of games played.

The prize money received by the clubs is similar to the UEFA Champions League. The prize money is divided into fixed payments based on participation and results, and variable amounts that depend of the value of their TV market.
