FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will renew their rivalry with a first-leg UEFA Champions League quarerfinal clash at the Spotify Camp Nou on the evening of Wednesday 8 April, kick-off at 20:00.
Barcelona earned their quarterfinal place in emphatic style, crushing Newcastle United 8-3 on aggregate in the previous round – featuring a hugely entertaining 7-2 home win in which Raphinha, Marc Bernal, Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowksi shared the goals.
Reprising that kind of form at the Camp Nou is exactly what coach Hansi Flick will want for this first leg against Atletico – though the German tactician knows that will be difficult against an Atletico side renowned for their organisation: “The next round also looks like it will be very difficult. We have to go step by step, match by match; that’s what we did last season and will do again.”

Atletico also overcame English opposition in the previous round, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 7-5 on aggregate. Los Colchoneros were impressive in the first leg, racking up a 5-2 home win, though their 2-3 defeat in the return game in London would have raised some concerns for coach Diego Simeone.
Nonetheless, star forward Julian Alvarez is looking forward to the familiar challenge of Barca: “There's still some time before that, but we know it's going to be difficult. We've faced them many times, we know them and we'll prepare well for what is to come."
The teams battled in a La Liga clash this past Saturday evening, with Barca winning 2-1 in Madrid thanks to goals late in each half from Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski. Atletico opened the scoring via Giuliano Simeone. Barca saw Ronald Araujo and Marc Bernal forced off with injuries, making them questionable for the midweek clash.

In head-to-head terms, Barcelona and Atletico have met in 249 matches across all competitions. The Blaugranas have claimed 114 wins compared to 78 for Los Colchoneros, while 57 games have been drawn.
The teams have clashed four times already this season (twice in La Liga and twice in a Copa del Rey semifinal which Atletico won 4-3 on aggregate), with their most recent meeting the above-mentioned league clash from this past weekend.
