The Cityzens are on a five-game unbeaten run in the league following a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Southampton last time out. While goals have been hard to come by for City this season - by their lofty standards at least - manager Pep Guardiola has found comfort in a more 'solid' approach.

"We don't have our momentum to score goals," said Guardiola. "We have to accept it, but we have to survive now being solid and put our desire and our heart into the rest."

The Spaniard, whose team remain eight points off the pace, believes they are a long way off challenging Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

"We are far away, look at the table, it's a lot of points," Guardiola added. "They still have momentum in terms of goals.

"I saw their game against Tottenham Hotspur, how well they played. It's no secret how good they are but I told the guys 'forget about it'. We were eighth in the table, think about eighth, then seventh, then Europa League, then Champions League."

Newcastle head into the fixture in 12th spot on the league standings. The Magpies were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham last time out after having slumped to a 5-2 defeat away to Leeds United a few days prior.

Manchester City thumped Newcastle United 5-0 in the corresponding fixture last season. Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, David Silva and Raheem Sterling were all on target for the hosts, while Federico Fernandez netted an own goal.
