Espanyol ended a three-match losing run on Tuesday by beating Segunda Division side Cadiz 1-0 at home in the second-leg of their Copa Del Ray clash, progressing through to the last-16 on the away goals rule after a 2-2 draw on aggregate. Their league form has been somewhat inconsistent, having registered back-to-back victories on just one occasion. They find themselves in seventh place however and only seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona ahead of this weekend’s encounter.

Espanyol recent results: (all competitions)

04/12/2018 – Espanyol 1-0 Cadiz (CDR)
01/12/2018 – Getafe 3-0 Espanyol
25/11/2018 – Espanyol 1-3 Girona
11/11/2018 – Sevilla 2-1 Espanyol

Barcelona, despite winning just eight of the opening 14 matches in La Liga, still hold a one-point lead over second-placed Sevilla and are the leagues leading scorers with 37 goals to their name. Ernesto Valverde’s men eased into the next round of the Copa Del Ray with a 5-1 aggregate win over lower league outfit Cultural Leonesa, extending their unbeaten run to four matches in the process since a shock 4-3 defeat to Real Betis last month.

Joan ‘Rubi’ Sicilia’s side have not beaten the mighty Barcelona in the league since they pulled off a stunning victory at the Nou Camp back in February 2009 when Ivan de la Pena struck twice for the visitors in a 2-1 win.

They did manage a 1-0 home win against Barca in the first-leg of their Copa Del Ray affair in January with Oscar Melendo’s goal ending a 6-match losing streak and a run of 19 matches without a win against them in all competitions.

The corresponding fixture last season ended in a 1-1 stalemate in February after Gerard Pique equalised for the visitors eight minutes from the end to steal a point following Gerard Moreno’s 66th minute opening goal for the Blanquiazules.
