Man United look for revenge over the Hornets

2019/20 Premier League

Round 27

22-24 February 2020

Manchester United will be out for revenge when they host Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday 23 February 2020, kick-off at 15:00. The match is one of 10 spread from 22 to 24 February for the 27h round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Watford forward Troy Deeney

United come into the match on the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 win away to Chelsea on Monday 17 February, thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire. The result sees them in seventh place and now just three points off the top four.

“It gives us confidence and it gives us a chance,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “It’s going to be a tight race; we’re not going to get help from anyone because we played [on Monday] and we’ve already got a game on Thursday night [in the Europa League]. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why we didn’t play on Saturday. We’ll just have to dust ourselves off and get going again, and recover as quick as we can.”

Watford went into their ‘winter break’ on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion, a result which left them still in the relegation zone and having gone five games without a win across all competitions.

“We all have to keep our nerve,” manager Nigel Pearson said. “We all have to make sure that our disappointment at negative experiences doesn’t have a damaging effect because very quickly things can change. Whether it is to do with a relegation battle or whether it is to do with holding your nerve to end up winning something.”

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea

In head-to-head stats, Man United and Watford have met in 33 previous matches. The Red Devils have claimed 22 wins compared to six for the Hornets, while five games has been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Vicarage Road in December 2019, Watford claimed a 2-0 home win thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney.
