Nigeria's best team in last two decades

Nigeria are one of the heavyweights of African football having produced many world-class players.

We create the best Nigerian football team made up of players, who played for the Super Eagles in the last 20 years.

Formationa: 4-3-3

GOALKEEPER

Vincent Enyeama

The West African country has had many talented goalkeepers down the years including Austin Ejide, Vincent Enyeama and Ike Shorunmu.

However, Enyeama, who is Nigeria's most capped player of all time with 101 caps, starts in goal having established himself as arguably the greatest Nigerian goalkeeper of all-time.

“As a coach that has worked with different generations of Super Eagles’ players," former Nigeria coach Adegboye Onigbinde told The Guardian.

"I know Nigeria has produced great goalkeepers like Best Ogedengbe, Peter Rufai, Emmanuel Okala, Patrick Okala, Peter Fregene, Wilfred Agbonavbare, Joe Erico, Innua Rigogo, Alloy Agu, Zion Ogunfeyimi and Agwo Nnaji, among others. But I think we should give the best goalkeeper so far in Nigeria to Vincent Enyeama."

FULL-BACKS

Efe Ambrose & Elderson Echiejile

Many players have featured in the right-back position for the Super Eagles including Chidi Odiah and Abdullahi Shehu since 2000, and some were versatile defenders like Efe Ambrose.

Ambrose gets the nod ahead of Odiah and Shehu due to his consistency, and reliability whenever he plays for his national team.

Meanwhile, Nigeria have produced great left-backs like Elderson Echiejile, Taye Taiwo and Celestine Babayaro, who have played for top European club clubs.

Echiejile edges out Babayaro and Taiwo having helped the Super Eagles clinch the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title as a key player in defence.

CENTRAL DEFENDERS

Joseph Yobo & Taribo West

The Super Eagles have been blessed with quality central defenders, who enjoyed some success both at a club and international level.

Kenneth Omeruo, Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong are currently the country's best central defenders

However, Joseph Yobo and Taribo West remain Nigeria's greatest central defenders of all-time having enjoyed lots of success with the national team.

CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS

Sunday Oliseh, John Obi Mikel & Jay-Jay Okocha

Nigeria have also produced world-class midfielders, who have played for the best clubs in the world.

Alex Iwobi, Sunday Oliseh, Wilfried Ndidi, John Obi Mikel, Mutiu Adepoju and Jay-Jay Okocha all come to mind when you think of the best Nigerian midfielders since 2000.

However, Oliseh, Mikel and Okocha get the nod in a three-man midfield as they are still the best midfielders to play for the Super Eagles.

“Mikel is the greatest player,” Legendary Nigerian striker Daniel Amokachi told Brila FM.

“He has won everything that a player can hope to; the Champions League, Europa, Afcon in 2013 and he also captained the national team.

“As a footballer, your laurels count and that will surely count for Mikel because nobody has won that much in Nigerian football.”

FORWARDS

Ahmed Musa, Nwankwo Kanu & Odion Ighalo

Nigeria have had several attackers, who are considered to be the greatest African forwards of all-time.

Yakubu Ayegbeni, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, Obafemi Martins and Nwankwo Kanu have been Nigeria's most outstanding attackers in the last two decades.

Kanu, Ighalo and Musa start in a three-man attack based on the impact they have made while in national team colours.

Between them they have scored 44 goals for the Super Eagles (Musa - 15, Kanu - 13, Ighalo - 16), but that is not their only benefit as they are able to create scoring chances for teammates as well.
