Liverpool pulled off an unlikely treble back in 2001, capturing the English League Cup and FA Cup domestically, coupled with the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) on the continental stage. During that remarkable run, the Reds managed a 1-0 win over the mighty Barcelona at Anfield, courtesy of a Gary McAllister spot-kick late in the first-half, which sent the home side through to the final at the Catalan’s expense.
Merseyside has witnessed some monumental nights under those Anfield nights and if Liverpool are to seal their spot in a second successive
UEFA Champions League final in 2019, they will need a repeat of that famous feat 18 years ago – their last home win against the Blaugrana.
Following Manchester City’s victory against Leicester in the English Premier League on Monday evening - a result which leaves Liverpool’s title ambitions out of their own hands heading into the final weekend – Jurgen Klopp and his team will turn their attention to Barcelona as they attempt to overturn a three-goal first leg deficit.
It wouldn’t be the first time, as Roma proved in the quarter-finals last season, coming back from 4-1 down in the first-leg to win 3-0 at home rather unexpectedly, handing the Spaniards a taste of their own medicine. Barcelona came from four goals down to send PSG crashing out of the competition in the round of 16 with a 6-1 second-leg triumph at home just a season prior.
No side has ever overturned a three-goal deficit in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool could be without the services of key figures Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the crucial clash as the pair face late fitness tests and respective injuries picked up in their weekend win over Newcastle United.
Barcelona wrapped up the La Liga title with a 1-0 over Levante last weekend and hence had the luxury of resting their stars including Messi, Suarez and Coutinho for their encounter with Celta Vigo on Saturday which ended in a rather disappointing 2-0 defeat.
Tuesday will be the 10th time that the duo will face-off in a competitive European tie, having registered three victories apiece. The last meeting at Anfield saw former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen score the only goal of the game as the visitors came away with a win but it was not enough to send them through to the next round as Liverpool progressed on the away goals rule having already secured a 2-1 win at the Nou Camp.

The Reds have won just one out of four matches against Barcelona at Anfield, losing the last two there between them.
