Watford face tough test against Liverpool

2019/20 Premier League

Round 28

28 February – 1 March 2020

Watford’s survival hopes will be put to the test when they host runaway league leaders Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Saturday 29 February 2020, kick-off at 18:30. The match is one of eight spread from 28 February to 1 March for the 28th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season, with two fixtures postponed due to the League Cup final between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane

Watford have gone six games across all competitions without a win and remained in the relegation zone following a 3-0 loss away to Manchester United this past weekend.

Manager Nigel Pearson reacted: “It’s a frustrating day in the sense that, when you play the bigger clubs, it’s very important that when you create chances or have opportunities, you do everything you can to take them. We didn’t take the chances we had early in the game.”

Liverpool will be looking to take another step toward what is surely an inevitable title triumph, but midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum has explained that manager Jurgen Klopp will not allow any sense of complacency to set in.

“We also have a manager who makes sure we have both feet on the ground when we have a moment when we’re not concentrated on something like that!” explained the Dutch player. “It’s hard and tough but on the other side, we also enjoy it because it’s a good feeling if you give everything on the pitch and feel that you’ve succeeded at the end of the game.”

Watford forward Troy Deeney

In head-to-head stats, Watford and Liverpool have met in 33 previous matches. The Reds have claimed 24 wins compared to five for the Hornets, while four games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Anfield in December 2019, Liverpool claimed a 2-0 home victory thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah. Watford have not beaten the Reds since December 2015.
