Who is the most successful F1 driver?

Many drivers have achieved unbelievable glory in Formula One since the first championship was awarded in 1950.

Names like Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost and Lewis Hamilton come to mind when one thinks of successful Formula One drivers.

However, Schumacher remains the undisputed boss of the grid having set many records which remain intact.

We take a look at unique records held by the German sports icon which make him the most decorated driver in the history of the sport.

Most Grand Prix Wins - 91

Schumacher has remarkably won 91 races out of 308 Grand Prix entries which remains a record in Formula having achieved this between 1992 and 2006.

The retired driver secured his maiden win at the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix where he was driving a Benetton-Ford a year after making his Formula One debut.

His last Grand Prix win came at the 2006 Chinese race driving a Ferrari. He went on to finish second on the drivers' championship standings in that season.

Most Races Won In Single Season - 13

Schumacher enjoyed his best season in Formula One during the 2004 campaign when he recorded an impressive 13 victories.

It is a record which he now shares with his compatriot Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, but Schumacher achieved this in 18 entries compared to the former's 19.

Furthermore, Schumacher, who is nicknamed the Red Baron, boasts a 72.22% win rate in a season compared to Vettel's 68.42%.

Most races left in the season when becoming World Champion - 6

Schumacher was simply unstoppable during the 2002 season as he clinched the world championship with six races left.

The Hurth-born legend finished first or second in every race except for the Malaysian Grand Prix, where he finished third, thus achieving a podium position in every race.

He won a then-record 11 Grands Prix, surpassing the previous record of nine wins - setting the record for the shortest time in which the World Drivers' Championship had been clinched.

Most consecutive titles- 5

The Red Baron enjoyed his best title-winning run between 2000 and 2004.

Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello (twice) and Kimi Räikkönen finished as runners up behind a very dominant Schumacher.

It remains a record for the most consecutive World Drivers' titles (5) with Vettel and Argentine racing legend Fangio having won four in a row.

"I think Michael was probably the best everI think Ayrton Senna's technique was flawed. He was this amazingly talented driver and had an amazing touch, but he had a couple of techniques that weren't correct and he didn't look into everything," former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine told BBC.

"I remember at the Japanese Grand Prix, Michael was fastest and I was second fastest, in my first grand prix into the pit lane. Senna was only fourth or fifth.

"Michael practiced the pit entry and Senna didn't, so there's things that he missed. I'm a huge fan of him but I think Michael would have, well Michael did beat him, when they were racing."

Most Drivers' Championships - 7

Schumacher retired from professional racing having won seven world championships, hence he is regarded by many as the greatest driver of all time.

The Red Baron clinched the coveted drivers' title in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 before retiring in 2012.

He was "statistically the greatest driver the sport has ever seen" at the time of his retirement from the sport.
