Liverpool take aim at the Saints

2019/20 Premier League

Round 25

1-2 February 2020

On their seemingly inexorable march to championship glory, Liverpool will next host Southampton at Anfield on Saturday 1 February 2020, kick-off at 16:00. The match is one of 10 spread across the weekend of 1-2 February for the 25th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Southampton striker Danny Ings

Liverpool suffered a minor set-back this past weekend when they were held 2-2 by lower league Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, though their Premier League form remains impeccable: a 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers last midweek was their 14th straight victory in the competition. The FA Cup replay means they will be busy during the ‘winter break’ but manager Jurgen Klopp insists his players will have time off following this clash against the Saints.

“I have said to the boys already, two weeks ago, that we will have a winter break, so it means we will not be there [at the FA Cup replay] – it will be the kids who play that game because they cannot deal with us like nobody cares about it,” said the German tactician.

Southampton will also have an FA Cup replay to contend with during the time they should have off, following a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend.

"In the end I think we should have overtime, it is a cup game and we should have a winner or loser," said Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. "Now we have a replay in our winter break and that doesn't make sense for me.”

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson

In head-to-head stats, Liverpool and Southampton have met in 111 previous matches. The Reds have claimed 56 wins compared to 30 for the Saints, while 25 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at St Mary’s Stadium in August 2019, Liverpool claimed a 2-1 away win: goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino put them in control of the game, before Southampton netted a late consolation through Danny Ings.
