Porto and Desportivo Aves will open the Portuguese top flight season when they meet for the Super Cup at Aveiro Municipal Stadium on Saturday, 4 August 2018, kick-off at 21h45 CAT.
Porto earned their place in the traditional curtain-raiser by winning the Primeira Liga last season. The Dragons, under coach Sergio Conceicao, finished top of the Portuguese league with a haul of 88 points from their 34 matches.
This left Porto seven points clear of rivals Benfica and saw them claim a first championship title since 2013.
Conceicao’s side have been busy in the transfer market, losing the likes of Diogo Dalot, Ricardo Pereira and Willy Boly, while players such as Chancel Mbemba, Majeed Waris and Eder Militao have been brought in as Porto target a second straight Liga title.
Desportivo Aves, meanwhile, won their first major competition by securing the Taca de Portugal (Portuguese FA Cup) back in May. The Vila das Aves-based side upset Sporting 2-1 in the final, with a brace of goals from Alexandre Guedes.
Both teams have been busy with pre-season friendlies in recent weeks. Porto were last in action on Saturday, July 28 when they drew 0-0 with Newcastle United, while Aves played to a 2-2 draw with Santa Clara on the same day.
In head-to-head stats, Porto and Aves have met in seven previous matches. The Dragons boast an unbeaten record in the rivalry, with six wins and a draw to their name. The teams’ most recent clash was in the Primeira Liga in April, with Porto claiming a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Alex Telles and Otavinho.
