Verstappen, Gasly ready for French GP challenge

2019 Formula 1 season, Round 8

French Grand Prix

Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet

Sunday 23 June

Red Bull Racing-Honda drivers Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly will be up for the challenge when the 2019 Formula 1 season hosts Round 8, the French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard on Sunday 23 June.

The Red Bulls had a tough outing at the last race in Canada, where Verstappen finished in a season-low fifth place (though it was actually a decent recovery drive after being eliminated in the second phase of qualifying), while Gasly came home in eighth.

Verstappen held onto fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship standings, though he saw his advantage over nearest chaser Charles Leclerc of Ferrari cut to 16 points.

The Dutchman will hope for a repeat of his showing at the French Grand Prix in 2018, where he put in an excellent drive to claim second place behind Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

Gasly, meanwhile, will hope to find inspiration from racing in front of his home crowd. The Frenchman had the misfortune of retiring from last year’s GP at the Circuit Paul Ricard and will want to at least bring his car home in the points this time around.

Red Bull, though, are likely to find it tough to challenge the pace of Mercedes and Ferrari on the high-speed circuit, while they will also need to beware the rising form of Renault.
