Watford’s battle against relegation from the Premier League will continue when they face hosts Burnley at Turf Moor on Thursday 25 June 2020. The match is one of five spread from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 June, as the English continues its return from a three-month pandemic-enforced absence.

Burnley’s return to football was a disastrous one, as they slumped to a 5-0 loss away to Manchester City on Monday night. The Clarets have gone three matches without a win in the Premier League, but they are enough points clear of the relegation zone not to fear the drop.

“It was a reality night,” said manager Sean Dyche after the defeat at the Etihad Stadium. “When [City] are on it, they’re top class. You come out of lockdown period, which is difficult anyway, to get your players really up to tempo, match fit... we have a few challenges ourselves with our squad size at the minute. I didn’t think there was a lack of effort or endeavour, it was down to the quality of the opposition.”

Watford very nearly began their restart on a low note, as they needed a last-gasp equaliser from defender Craig Dawson to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City last Saturday. The Hornets remain above the relegation zone, but cannot afford to relax in any way.

"It is not straightforward but I am really pleased with how the players have detached themselves from the potential negatives of the situation and still performed,” said manager Nigel Pearson of playing behind closed doors. "I think we played well against a side [Leicester] having a successful campaign, it is an important point for us.”

In head-to-head stats, Burnley and Watford have met in 43 matches across all competitions. The Clarets have claimed 20 wins compared to 13 for the Hornets, while 10 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, Burnley claimed a 3-0 away win at Vicarage Road in November 2019, thanks to goals from Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and James Tarkowski.
