Hull City will look to claim a major scalp on their return to the Premier League, as they host Manchester United at MKM Stadium for a Matchday 1 clash on the afternoon of Saturday 22 August.

Form and team news

Hull secured a return to the Premier League after a decade away by winning the promotion playoff, defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium back in May.

Coach Sergej Jakirovic has seen his squad boosted by the arrivals of Konstantinos Tzolakis, Jens Hjertø-Dahl, Jack Butland, Elliot Stroud, Hidemasa Morita and Matt Targett in an effort to get them ready for the challenge of trying to survive in the Premier League.

Man Utd finished third on the Premier League table last season, with Michael Carrick succeeding Ruben Amorim as coach and leading the team on a strong run in the second half of the campaign.

Carrick was then confirmed as permanent coach, and the Red Devils have been conservative in the transfer market, signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to boost their midfield, as well as backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow and young prospect Tynan Thompson. Forward Marcus Rashford has returned from a loan spell at Barcelona and is set to be re-incorporated as part of the squad.

Quotes

Hull midfielder Jens Hjertø-Dahl: “The last three and a half years with the senior team were the greatest years of my life in Tromsø. I will miss them but I’m ready for Hull and what’s waiting here.

“I needed a challenge and this is the biggest challenge you can get. I think this is the right step and that Hull can help me improve. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the atmosphere, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Head-to-head

Hull and Man Utd have met in 18 matches dating back as far as 1949. The Red Devils have claimed 13 wins compared to three for the Tigers, while two games have been drawn.

When Hull were last in the Premier League in 2016/17, United took four points off them with a 1-0 win at the MKM Stadium and 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also defeated the Tigers 3-2 on aggregate in the semifinals of the EFL League Cup that season.
