The epic 2022 Final
Played at Lusail Stadium in Qatar on 18 December 2022, the final between Argentina and France was instant legend. Argentina dominated the first half, with Lionel Messi converting a penalty and Ángel Di María adding a sublime finish to make it 2–0. France, trailing and seemingly out of it, erupted in the second half. Kylian Mbappé, already a global icon, scored two penalties in a nine-minute window to level the match at 3–2 after Argentina had briefly retook the lead.
Extra time delivered more chaos. Mbappé completed his hat-trick with another penalty, making it 3–3. The match, already electric, now felt like a mythical battle between two of football’s greatest modern talents: Messi and Mbappé.
When the clock hit 120 minutes, the final was still undecided. In the shootout, Messi and Mbappé both scored. But France’s Kingsley Coman was saved by Emiliano Martínez, and Aurélien Tchouaméni missed wide. Argentina’s Paulo Dybala, Leandro Paredes, and Gonzalo Montiel converted, sealing a 4–2 victory. Argentina won their third World Cup, and Messi finally captured the trophy that had long seemed destined for him.
