In modern times, the Third Place Playoff has retained significance. For emerging football nations, finishing third can represent a historic achievement. That was certainly the case at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 to claim bronze.
Played at the Khalifa International Stadium, the match was notable for its quality and narrative weight. Croatia, runners-up in 2018, underlined their consistency on the global stage by securing a second World Cup medal in four years. Goals from Joško Gvardiol and Mislav Oršić sealed the victory in a lively first half, with Morocco responding through Achraf Dari but ultimately falling short.
