Villarreal CF will lock horns with Liverpool FC in a UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg match at Anfield on April 27.

The Spanish outfit booked their spot in this round after defeating German champions Bayern Munich 2-1 on aggregate in a quarter-final tie.

The Yellow Submarine are enjoying a five-match unbeaten run in the Champions League having recorded three wins and two draws.

Villarreal are also undefeated in their last three away matches in the tournament having registered one draw and three successive wins on the road.

The Valencian side has reached the semi-final of the European Cup/Champions League for only the second time.

Their last semi-final appearance came in the 2005/06 season and they lost 3-1 on aggregate to English giants Arsenal FC, who went on to lose to Villarreal's Spanish rivals FC Barcelona in the final.

"The enjoyment at these levels of the Champions League is incredible on a professional level, in terms of emotions and moments," Villarreal manager Unai Emery said.

"We have been managing our efforts since last Tuesday [against Bayern]. Today, three of the players who played on Saturday [against Valencia CF] played again. We have tried to find answers in the squad and we are satisfied.

"We had a setback with Gerard [Moreno] on Saturday, let's hope it's short so he can make it against Liverpool. Today it was important to win, that there were no injuries and to manage efforts with some players. As well as winning, we finished without any injuries."

This will be the first-ever meeting between Liverpool and Villarreal in the Champions League.

However, Liverpool did host Villarreal in a UEFA Europa League clash on 5 May 2016.

The Reds secured a 3-0 win over the Yellow Submarine in the semi-final second-leg match which was played at the iconic Anfield.

Therefore, it was Liverpool who advanced to the final after winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
