Atletico Madrid will take on Athletic Bilbao in a Spanish LaLiga match at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on January 9.
This will be the 54th meeting between Atletico and Bilbao across all competitions since 1993. Atletico hold the upper hand in this fixture having recorded 31 wins compared to Bilbao's 14 victories, while eight games ended in a draw.

The last league meeting between Atletico and Bilbao was on 14 June 2020. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in a match which was played at the Estadio San Mames Barria.
Atletico thrashed Elche 3-1 in their last home match in the league which took place on December 19. The win extended the Mattress Makers' unbeaten run to 18 matches at home in LaLiga having registered four draws and 14 wins.

Bilbao were held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal in their last away game which was played on December 22. The Lions' winless run on the road in LaLiga stretched to seven matches as a result, having recorded three draws and four defeats during this period.
Gaizka Garitano, the Bilbao manager, is keen to ensure that his side returns to winning ways.
“The players, as well as the coaching staff, have to have that pressure to always win," Garitano said.
"We must be hungry to win, we’re at a great club, with high standards. We have to keep working so that the small details don’t punish us so much. When things are done well, the reward should be better, and we’ll keep fighting for that.”
