Cynthia Calvillo (8-1-1) will look to claim a major scalp when she faces Jessica Eye (15-7-0, 1 NC) in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Eye v Calvillo from the UFC APEX facility in Las Vegas on the morning of Sunday 14 June 2020.
The pair’s Women’s Featherweight match sees Eye looking to build back toward the top of the division. She dropped down to the 125-pound division back in 2018, putting together three straight victories and earning herself a shot at flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
However, ‘Evil’ was beaten via knockout in the second round of her title match in June last year, though she has since bounced back with a unanimous decision win over Viviane Araujo in December.
Calvillo, meanwhile, was last in action against Marina Rodriguez in December – a match which ended in a majority decision draw. Prior to that, the Californian had put together an impressive 5-1-0 record since first joining the UFC in 2017.
Many UFC fans have complained that this represents an underwhelming main event, but Calvillo hit back with a spicy retort:
“When it happened, I was like, ‘I’m gonna take it. I know a lot of people don’t agree with it but, honestly, F y’all to tell you the truth,” she told MMA Fighting. “What was I supposed to say, ‘No guys. I don’t agree with this main event. I don’t know why you guys did this, we’re not gonna do it?’ No, of course we’re gonna take it.
“As fighters and where we’re at, whoever would be in my position would absolutely, 100 percent take that fight. And if you guys want to s**t on it, then go ahead. I guarantee you motherf****** would do it.”
The main card will also feature a co-main event between Middleweights Karl Roberson and Marvin Vettori. The pair have major bad blood between them after two previous cancellations and UFC president Dana White is expecting a thriller.
"There are a lot of fights when guys talk smack, and then there's heat... and then the fight sucks," White said. "That will not be the case with this fight.
"Vettori is so fun to watch fight. This guy goes for it. He goes for the finish in every fight, and Karl Roberson is the same way. This is a fight that has potential for Fight of the Night or Performance of the Night."
