Villa head into back-to-back home matches against Manchester City and Leicester on the back of successive league wins.

"Our first half performance was superb. In the second half we had to dig in a little bit, roll our sleeves up and suffer at times," said Gerrard following their 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

“That’s what you’ve got to do in this league, especially in environments like this where it’s tough.

“I’m really proud of the players and their effort and application. They deserve all the plaudits that are going to come their way, but we’re not going to be able to enjoy it for too long," he added.

Leicester snapped their winless run in the league with a 4-2 win over Watford before away matches against Southampton and Villa this week.

"It was an excellent performance considering the conditions," Brendan Rodgers told
LCFC TV after their win over the Hornets. "The players played the conditions really well. It was difficult to see from the side and I think for the players in the game, but the concentration from both sets of players was very good. We stayed focused and got the job done.

"You can see the mentality of the team with the fourth goal. Overall, I’m very, very pleased with the result, it’s a very good performance, but there’s still elements in there where we can be better, of course. It’s a very important three points."

The two teams shared the spoils over two matches last season, both winning away from home. Villa won 1-0 at King Power Stadium before Leicester returned the favour with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park.
