Hideki Matsuyama will be looking to emulate one of the greatest golfers of all time, Arnold Palmer when he competes in this year's Phoenix Open.

The Japanese superstar has won this tournament twice in his illustrious career having lifted the trophy in 2016 and 2017 as he won back-to-back titles.

A victory at this year's event will see the 29-year-old become the third golfer in history to win the Phoenix Open three times after record winner Palmer.

Matsuyama won the Phoenix Open for the first time following a playoff with Rickie Fowler as he secured his victory on the fourth hole in February 2016.

The Ehime-born golfer then entered a playoff on Sunday to defend his title in the following year, this time against Webb Simpson and he made birdie to win the tournament for the second time.

Since then Matsuyama has won the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 2021 Masters Tournament, 2021 Zozo Championship and 2022 Sony Open.

The 29-year-old won the Sony Open after making an eagle on the first extra hole to claim the victory in Hawaii just last month.

"Russell [Henley] was playing so beautifully the front nine," Matsuyama said after winning the Sony Open.

"But at the turn I was thinking 'he can't keep this up, can he?' I was able to birdie 10 and then a two-shot swing at 11 and then the game was on again.

"To be able to win back-to-back with Zozo (Championship) and here with at the Sony, and especially on a course that I haven't really played that well," he added.

"It's a tough golf course for me, but I had a great time, got sunburned because it was hot, but I'm still very happy."
