Qatar vs Nigeria

Nigeria will look to open their 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a victory when they take on Qatar at the Tychy Stadium on Friday 24 May, kick-off at 17h00.

The Flying Eagles secured their qualification for the tournament in Poland by coming home in fourth place at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger earlier this year.

That was perhaps not the most impressive showing from coach Paul Aigbogun’s team, but traditionally Nigeria up their game for the global tournament. This will be their 12th U-20 World Cup appearance (and a first since 2015) and the West African giants have been runners-up twice (1989 & 2005).

The Flying Eagles will look to the likes of Nazifi Yahaya, Maxwell Effiom, Alhassan Ibrahim and Paschal Durugbor for inspiration as they aim to represent the continent with pride at the global youth tournament in Poland.

Qatar could prove to be tough opponents: they qualified as semifinalists from last year’s AFC U-19 Championship and will be appearing at the U-20 World Cup for the fourth time (with their best showing a runners-up finish back in 1981).

They are coached by Spaniard Felix Sanchez Bas and will hope forward Abdulrasheed Umaru and Hashim Ali continue the form that saw them rack up a combined 12 goals at the AFC U-19 tournament last year.
