Highlights for Nigeria this week at the Olympics

2020 Summer Olympic Games

Esther Tamaramiyebi Toko will be Nigeria's first athlete to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan on July 23. 
 
The 21-year-old rower, who won bronze and silver medals at the 2019 African Beach Games, will take part in the women’s rowing, single sculls heats.
 
The country's table tennis trio of Omotayo Olajide, Edem Offiong and Olufunke Oshonaike are set to participate in the preliminary round on July 24.
 
Reigning African champion Olajide will compete in the men’s singles event and he will be hoping to go all the way and clinch his maiden Olympic medal. 
 
“Qualifying for the Olympics is a dream come true. I am very proud of myself. I didn't stop believing in myself. I kept on," Olajide said.

Offiong and Oshonaike, who both competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, will take part in the women's singles tournament.
 
Meanwhile, the Nigeria men's basketball team is scheduled to start their Group B campaign against Australia at the Saitama Super Arena on July 25.
 
Nicknamed the D'Tigers, Nigeria and Australia met at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with Aussies securing a 97-55 win. 
 
The D'Tigers are making their third appearance in the Olympics and they will be targeting a winning start to their Group B campaign.
 
Lastly, Elizabeth Anyanacho is set to take part in the Taekwondo, women’s 67kg round of 16 on July 26.
 
The 22-year-old, who participated at the 2019 African Games, winning a bronze medal at 67 kg, will be keen to make her mark in Tokyo.
