Boasting a trophy cabinet filled with 11 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles, Nigeria will no doubt hope to make space for one more trophy as they commence their tournament bid with a tie against Tunisia at Stade Larbi Zaouli next Sunday.
Nigeria and Tunisia will share Group B alongside Algeria and Botswana as one of the toughest selection of teams at the tournament.
While Nigeria are fresh off a 3-1 win against Ghana in a pre-WAFCON friendly match that took place at the Lanoria Complex on Sunday, Tunisia last featured in April where they suffered a 3-1 loss against Morocco in an international friendly.
Tunisia’s best placing at the WAFCON came in 2022, where they managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition. However, Tunisia saw out a 1-0 loss to South Africa, who eventually went on to lift the crown.
Reflecting on the WAFCON in Morocco, Tunisia head coach Kamel Saada believes his side will face a steep challenge next to giants such as Nigeria, Algeria and Botswana.
“It’s a tough group. Everyone knows the quality of Nigeria. Algeria is improving fast. Botswana too. We’re not underestimating anyone. We’ll need to be disciplined, focused, and play our best football,” Saada said after naming his squad.
“We’re preparing match by match with attention to physical, tactical, and mental aspects. All players are present. The mindset is good. The team that plays smart, cohesive football can pull off surprises,” he said.
