Nigeria eyeing second win over Argentina and last 16 qualification

The Super Eagles occupy the second spot in the group with three points after playing to a win and a loss.

Despite a poor start where they lost 2-0 to leaders Croatia, coach Gernot Rohr guided his troops to a hard fought 2-0 win over Iceland in the second match.

As they chase three points on Tuesday against the desperate and lacklustre Argentina, the West Africans will have to go all out for a win to beat the South Americans and qualify for the last 16 of the tournament.

For the Argentines, they sit at the bottom of the table with one point following their opening draw against Iceland and a 3-0 loss to the Blazers of Croatia.

Although they were dubbed the group favourites, the star studded side led by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has failed to crack it in Russia.

Messi missed a penalty in the opening match and many have questioned their hunger to succeed at a global stage whilst some have pointed fingers at coach Jorge Sampaoli.

The two sides have met on eight occasions in the past and the South Americans enjoy a record of five wins whilst two went for Nigeria and one match has been drawn.

The last time the two teams met in an international friendly was back in November 2017 and saw Nigeria win 4-2.
