Group D

Malawi v Ethiopia

Bingu National Stadium
Lilongwe, Malawi
Sunday, 5 June 2022
Kick-off is at 15h00

Malawi will go head to head with Ethiopia in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Bingu National Stadium on June 5.

The Flames succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Morocco in their last competitive match which was the 2021 AFCON Round of 16 match on January 25.

Therefore, Malawi are winless in their last two competitive matches having recorded one defeat and one draw.

The Southern African side is enjoying a seven-match unbeaten run at home in the AFCON qualifiers having recorded four wins and three draws.

“The players that were in the camp worked very hard and looked very determined, which is fantastic," Malawi coach Mario Marinica said ahead of their clash with Ethiopia.

"This gives me the belief that we are on the right track as far as our preparations are concerned. The players’ fitness was also up to international standards.

“We are concerned that some players abroad have not played for their respective clubs. This is quite worrisome. Ahead of the qualifiers, we need to have all our players featuring for their clubs."

Meanwhile, Ethiopia managed to hold Burkina Faso to a 1-1 draw in their last competitive game which was the 2021 AFCON Group A game on January 17.

The draw extended the Walia Ibex's winless run to seven matches in competitive games having registered four draws and three defeats.

The East African giants are winless in their last five matches on the road in the AFCON qualifiers having registered five successive defeats as the visitors.

The last meeting between Malawi and Ethiopia was on 17 March 2021.

Walia Ibex embarrassed the Flames as they won 4-1 in an international friendly match which was played at the Bahir Dar Stadium in Ethiopia.
