While the likes of Red Bull and McLaren have dominated Formula 1 during the last couple of seasons, Mercedes appears to be notable contenders this year with Kimi Antonelli leading the charge ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
The Italian teenager currently tops the driver’s standings on 171 points followed up by teammate George Russel in second on 131 points.
However, it was Russel who came out on top at the recent Austian Grand Prix who finished with a time of 1:26: 37.979s with Antonelli coming in at third, +1.986s behind.
Antonelli has been the standout driver in Formula 1 this season, with five victories to his name, along with seven podiums following his impressive showing at the Red Bull Ring.
The championship leader’s most impressive performance came at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this month as he claimed P1, +6.271s ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.
Speaking on Antonelli’s charge for the 2026 Formula 1 title, Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff expressed that the 19-year-old is showing the kind of enthusiasm he enjoys from his drivers, as they continue to engage in a shootout for first place on the standings.
"He was very eager in the beginning, and I like the enthusiasm. That's how it should be!” Wolff said.
"We want the driver to be on the attack all the time.
"You can't speed up a donkey, but you can slow down a racehorse."
