The Reds have recovered in recent weeks after a dismal run of results which not only ended their hopes of retaining the league title they won last season, but put them in serious danger of missing out on Uefa Champions League football.

Liverpool are unbeaten in five, but have drawn their two most recent matches 1-1. As a result, they have slipped down to seventh and sit seven points behind Chelsea in fourth spot on the league standings.

"We will challenge them [league leaders Manchester City] again next year but this year we can only finish our season as good as possible and we have nothing to do with semi finals and finals," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

"It always becomes harder because City never stops. That is clear. They did not stop and they will not stop.

"Manchester United is coming up definitely, everyone can see that. Chelsea is obviously in a brilliant place, a top squad. We  have to deal with all the other teams who are outstandingly strong but still go under the radar like Leicester City.

"Nobody should write off Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal. Obviously West Ham United is now flying. How can it be easier? It is not only City," Klopp added.

Southampton themselves have endured a tough run of results of late. The Saints have only won three league games in 2021 following a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City last time out. As a result, Ralph Hasenhuettl's troops dropped down 15th, having occupied a place in the top four late last year.

A solitary strike from Danny Ings led Southampton to a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the reverse fixture at St Mary's Stadium earlier this season.
