Liverpool look to take major step toward last 16

2019-20 UEFA Champions League

Matchday 4

5-6 November 2019

Liverpool will look to take a major step toward the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League when they host Genk in a Group E clash at Anfield on Tuesday 5 November 2019, kick-off at 22:00 CAT.

The Reds defeated their Belgian opponents 4-1 at the Luminus Arena in the previous round, with goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (two), Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool come into the match placed second on the Group E log with six points (one behind leaders Napoli) and a victory would put them within touching distance of progression into the knockout rounds.

"I’ve definitely missed the Champions League,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain of his return to prominence. “It’s a special tournament to play in - a tournament we all want to grow up and play in one day. It’s nice to be back out there. Watching the boys bring it home last season was inspirational. To get a few goals [against Genk] is a bonus."

Genk are in dire straits at the bottom of the log and a defeat at Anfield would put them out of the running for progression into the last 16.

Mohamed Salah

"This is the strongest team I have played against,” said Genk goalkeeper Gaetan Coucke of the last match against Liverpool. He added, “We will have to enjoy every game as we do not play these kind of matches every year. Then we will see where we can gain some points."

The other Group E match on Tuesday sees Napoli host Red Bull Salzburg at Stadio San Paolo, with the Italian side also aiming to move toward qualification.
