Matchday 29

Chelsea v Newcastle United

Stamford Bridge
London, England

Kick-off is at 15h00

Chelsea will be looking to cement third place in the Premier League when they take on a resurgent Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, March 13.

Thomas Tuchel's side put the EFL Cup final defeat to Liverpool behind them as they thrashed Burnley 4-0 at Turf Moor last Saturday to go five points clear of Arsenal, who occupy fourth spot.

The Blues have now won three games on the spin and are unbeaten in their last four encounters ahead of the trip to Norwich on Thursday.

Tuchel praised the mentality of his players to deliver the goods against the Clarets after a challenging week which saw owner Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale.

"When you arrive at Turf Moor, you know what's waiting - physicality, direct play, headers, fighting for second balls, crosses, set-pieces. We stepped up and it shows for me a lot of character which is why I'm very proud," the German said.

"It shows the guys have what it takes to play for Chelsea and it shows we have the environment to focus on football."

The Magpies are starting to get their act together under Eddie Howe and last weekend's 2-1 victory over Brighton extended their beaten run in the league to eight outings.

The team from Tyneside also have a midweek fixture to contend with and they head to Southampton seven points above the drop zone in 14th position.

Howe is refusing to get carried away with their recent run of good form and insists the players remain focused on the challenges ahead as they prepare to play the next four games away from home.

"We've got a really difficult run of games - we've got four away games, which I think for any team in the Premier League is very difficult, and also they are four difficult opponents, so today was very important," he said.

"I saw the players in the dressing room afterwards and it's a good sign. They're pleased, but they're not over the top in how they are feeling. They know we are still in the midst of a very important spell."
