2022 Spanish Grand Prix

Max Verstappen will be determined to win the Spanish Grand Prix for the second time in his budding career on May 22.

The Red Bull Racing-RBPT driver narrowly missed out on last year's Spanish Grand Prix title as he finished second, but he did win the 2016 race.

Verstappen is coming into this year's race in top form having won the most recent race in the current season which was the 2022 Miami Grand Prix on May 8.

The reigning Formula One world champion wrestled the leadoff pole-sitter Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc early on then kept it in the late Safety Car restart and secured a victory.

The Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr finished second and third respectively as Italian constructors enjoyed a successful race in the USA.

However, Leclerc is still at the top of the 2022 Drivers' Championship standings and Verstappen placed second - five races into the current term.

Verstappen, who won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix before clinching the Miami Grand Prix, will be confident of winning in Spain in order to close the gap at the top.

“Yes, of course, it’s a very good comeback. I didn’t even do a [practice] start, so I didn’t know what to expect in the actual start," Verstappen said after the Miami Grand Prix.

"But we had a good launch, and I saw the opportunity to go around the outside [of Sainz] in Turn 1 so I tried. Luckily it worked. Then of course I was not very happy with that Safety Car.

"But of course fully understandable, what happened, and of course you cannot be too disappointed about it because also in the past it has benefited me in some races," he added.

"I knew it was going to be a tough one to the end, it was quite physical out there – now the next 10 laps we had to be flat-out! On a track like this it’s not easy.”

Ferrari are placed at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings and they are followed by Red Bull Racing-RBPT and Mercedes respectively.
