Suzuki rider Joan Mir will be looking to clinch his second win of the season at the Portuguese Grand Prix

The Spanish star was crowned 2020 MotoGP world champion despite finishing seventh in the most recent race which was the Valencian Grand Prix.

Mir has won only one race this season which was the European Grand Prix and he will be keen to record his second victory in Portimao.

The 2020 Valencian Grand Prix was won by Yamaha rider Franco Mobirdelli, who secured his third victory of the season.

Jack Miller of Ducati secured a second spot finish, while KTM rider Pol Espargaro finished third.

Mir is placed at the top of the 2020 riders' standings with 171 points heading into the final race of the season, Portuguese Grand Prix.

Morbidelli and Suzuki rider Alex Rins are placed second and third respectively and they will battle for the runner-up spot this weekend.

Mir has become the first Suzuki rider to win the title since Kenny Roberts Jr. in 2000, the first non-Honda or non-Yamaha rider to win the title since Ducati rider Casey Stoner in 2007, as well as the first Moto3 world champion to win the premier class title.

The 23-year-old explained how he managed to win the title in his second season as a MotoGP rider.

“It is something I have been fighting for all my life, since I was 10 years old. I had this dream on my mind and I didn’t stop until I got this title," Mir said.

"So what can I say? I didn’t expect it honestly because I expected it in the future, but we have the title and it is ours. “I would have said you are crazy [if you told me I would win the title in 2020 after making debut in 2019].

"Race by race, year by year I was fast and getting used to the bikes quickly and this made my progression fast, which is the key to being in MotoGP winning the title in the second year."

Suzuki are placed at the top of Manufacturers' Championship standings, but they are level on points with second-placed Ducati (201).

Yamaha are placed third with 188 points with one crucial race left this term.
