Portugal will look to continue their dominance of Group A in Europe’s 2022 World Cup Qualifiers when they welcome Luxembourg to Estadio do Algarve on the evening of Tuesday 12 October 2021. Kick-off is at 19:45.
Portugal sit atop the standings with 13 points from five matches, two ahead of nearest chasers Serbia, while Luxembourg are an impressive third after taking six points from their four outings thus far. Before the Navigators take on Luxembourg, the latter will be in action at home to Serbia on Saturday 9 October and could do the group leaders a massive favour.

Portugal’s September results saw them claim a home 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland and a 3-0 triumph away to Azerbaijan. Coach Fernando Santos felt his side should have been even more ruthless in the latter match, and wants to see that efficiency come to the fore this month.
“The only thing about the result that is not good was the amount of goals we scored," he explained. "When teams are not organised then they have difficulties, running a lot after the ball and wearing themselves out. When they have the ball they have more difficulties.” He added, “We were always looking for the goal and creating spaces to enter, either through the middle or out wide.”

Luxembourg had an up-and-down September, with a rousing 2-1 home win over Azerbaijan – in which Michael Pinto and Gerson Rodrigues scored their goals – followed by a 4-1 loss away to Serbia in Belgrade.
In head-to-head stats, Portugal and Luxembourg have met in 18 previous matches since 1961, with The Navigators claiming 16 wins compared to just one for the Red Lions. The teams’ last meeting was in March 2021 at Stade Josy Barthel and saw Portugal win 3-1 thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Palhinha
