2022/23 UEFA Champions League

Group stage
Matchday 2

Bayern Munich v Barcelona

Allianz Arena
Munich, England

Kick-off is at 20h00

Two European heavyweights will go head-to-head again this season in the UEFA Champions League when Bayern Munich lock horns with Barcelona at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, September 13.

The Bavarians and the Catalans were also drawn in the same group during the 2021/22 campaign, which saw Bayern claim victory both home and away.

Julian Nagelsmann's side made a winning start in the competition after they beat Inter Milan 2-0 at the San Siro on matchday 1, with Leroy Sane (25') opening the scoring before an own-goal from Danilo D'Ambrosio (66') sealed the three points.

The Reds are unbeaten in the Bundesliga after six games, but they trail leaders Union Berlin by two points in third place following three successive draws.

A 92nd-minute penalty from Sehrou Guirassy denied them maximum points against Stuttgart on Saturday and Nagelsmann admits more precision is needed in front of goal if Bayern hope to make it four wins in a row against the Blaugrana.

"We lacked our usual cutting edge when we had men over on the counter. I would have liked to see more cut and thrust. There wasn't enough hunger in front of goal," he said.

"We need to prepare as planned and work on a good match plan for the Barcelona game."

Robert Lewandowski comes up against his former employers just two months after leaving Munich for the Catalan capital in a €45 million deal.

The Polish star has hit the ground running at Barca, scoring six goals in his first five La Liga appearances - the best goalscoring start in the Spanish top flight this century.

Lewandowski also registered his first hat-trick for the Spanish giants in a 5-1 hammering of Viktoria Plzen on matchday 1 and he is the top scorer in the competition over the last three seasons with 36 goals in 27 outings.

Xavi has sung the praises of the 34-year-old striker, who was on the scoresheet again in the 4-0 win over Cadiz on Saturday.

"I would not change Robert for anyone in the world," Xavi was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo. "Experience is crucial. He's very mature, and his way of playing helps the young players.

"He has won everything, but he arrived with humility, and what he's doing is extraordinary."
