Nigeria v Sao Tome and Príncipe

Kick-off is at 17h00

Nigeria will be licking their lips in anticipation when Sao Tome and Príncipe arrive at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday, September 10.

The Super Eagles set a new record when they thrashed the Falcons and True Parrots 10-0 on matchday 2, which was the biggest win in their history.

However, Jose Peseiro's side was brought back down to earth on March 24 when they were beaten 1-0 by Guinea-Bissau in Abuja, although they quickly bounced back with a 1-0 victory over the Djurtus three days later.

Both teams have already qualified for the showpiece in Ivory Coast next year and the West African giants are now seeking their third win on the spin to secure top spot in Group A, with Guinea-Bissau trailing them by just two points in second place.

Peseiro suggested he could stick with the majority of the team that edged Sierra Leone 3-2 on June 18, but insisted the door remains open for those looking to be part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"If I change the team every time it will be difficult to create good organisation," he said. "We prepared for this game (against Sierra Leone) only five days and I needed to choose the right players. But the door of the Super Eagles is open for everybody."

After conceding 15 goals in their opening two games, Sao Tome and Príncipe picked up their one and only point to date in the group after playing out to a 2-2 draw with the Leone Stars on March 22.

The island nation will be determined to put on a better showing against Nigeria this time around to boost their confidence going into the 2026 World Cup qualifiers which starts in November.

Adriano Eusebio's side haven't won a game since they beat Mauritius 1-0 in the first leg of their preliminary round tie on 24 March 2022.
