2019 African Cup of Nations, Group A

Uganda vs Zimbabwe

Cairo International Stadium, Egypt
Wednesday, June 26th
Kick-off at 18:00

Zimbabwe will be eager to kick-start their African Cup of Nations campaign, following defeat to hosts Egypt in the opening game, when they go in search of their first points of the competition against a Uganda outfit that stunned the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-0 in their first match.

The Cranes came away with all three points from their opening encounter, edging the much more fancied DR Congo team to claim top spot in Group A after the first round of matches. Goals from Patrick Kaddu and Emmanuel Okwi either side of half-time sealed their first victory at a Cup of Nations finals since finishing as runners-up in 1978. Uganda could book their place in the next round with a win over Zimbabwe on Wednesday, if Egypt can also muster a win against the DRC.

The Warriors of Zimbabwe will be hoping for a much better showing when they take to the field against Uganda than they displayed in their opening encounter against the hosts. The mustered just over 40% of the possession and a measly 2 shots on target does not make for brilliant reading. They will be relying on their stars such as Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona and Evans Rusike to fire them to their first victory at an AFCON final since 2006, if they are to make it past the group stage for the first time in the history, at the fourth attempt.

Zimbabwe recent results:

21/06 – Egypt 1-0 Zimbabwe (AFCON)
16/06 – Tanzania 1-1 Zimbabwe (Friendly)
08/06 – Nigeria 0-0 Zimbabwe (Friendly)

This will be the 15th match played between the pair in all competitions. Their last meeting saw Zimbabwe edge Uganda 2-0 in a 2016 international friendly – just their second win from their last eight attempts against Uganda since July 1984.
