Struggling Arsenal desperate to beat Southampton

2019/20 Premier League

Round 13

23-25 November 2019

Arsenal will be desperate to claim three Premier League points when they host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday 23 November 2019, kick-off at 16:00 CAT.

Danny Ings

Arsenal struggles this season hit another low in their last outing, when they were comfortably beaten 2-0 at Leicester City – one of the teams they are competing with to earn a place in Europe next season. The Gunners have gone five matches without a win across all competitions and sit in a lowly sixth place on the Premier League log.

“We now have distance from [Leicester] in the table but we have time and with the possibility of being consistent, we can recover our confidence, recover the points. We want to have success for us, we want to challenge. We want to improve and we want to take the balance in the team,” said Arsenal manager Unai Emery, who is coming under increasing pressure.

Southampton come to London almost in a state of crisis. They suffered a fourth straight defeat across all competitions when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Everton before the international break. The Saints are second-from-bottom on the log and three points away from safety.

Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl is another manager under fire and admits he and his team are feeling the strain: “In the moment it is not nice but this is also this job. It’s not always nice, it’s not always winning games, it’s not always celebrating with the fans. It’s sometimes being out there and a little bit disappointment about what happened in the moment. But this is my job to hold the head up and try to find the right decisions.”

Arsenal defender David Luiz

In head-to-head stats, Arsenal and Southampton have met in 87 previous matches. The Gunners have claimed 43 wins compared to 21 for the Saints, while 23 games have been drawn.

The teams’ Premier League meetings last season produced two home wins: Southampton triumphed 3-2 at St Mary’s Stadium in December 2018, while Arsenal were 2-0 winners in the return game at the Emirates Stadium in February 2019. The Saints have not won away to Arsenal in a league match since 1987.
