Valladolid; Villarreal Set for Intriguing Friday Night Affair

Real Valladolid could take a major step to securing their La Liga status for another season, in their maiden campaign since their return to Spain’s top-flight, with a win against relegation threatened Villarreal outfit at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Friday evening.

The Blanquivioletta’s are majority owned by the legendary Brazilian forward Ronaldo although their league position is not something ‘El Fenomeno’ would have been familiar with back in his playing days. Real Valladolid have been hovering precariously above the dreaded drop zone all season and currently occupy 14th position, just two points clear of Rayo Vallecano in 18th.

Head Coach Sergio Gonzalez has seen his side pick up just eight points from a possible 27 available since the start of December and were recently dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Getafe 2-1 on aggregate. Their most recent outing ended in a humbling 4-0 defeat at the hands of Huesca.

Real Valladolid recent results: (all competitions)

01/02/2019 – Huesca 4-0 Valladolid
27/01/2019 – Valladolid 2-1 Celta Vigo
20/01/2019 – Levante 2-0 Valladolid
15/01/2019 – Valladolid 1-1 Getafe (CDR)
12/01/2019 – Valencia 1-1 Valladolid

The Yellow Submarines are without a win in any of their last nine matches in all competitions since beating Spartak Moscow in the Europa League back in December while their last taste of league success came on the 25th of November when they edged Real Betis 2-1 – a run of nine La Liga matches as well.

Javier Calleja’s team threw away a two-goal lead against Espanyol on Sunday, just weeks after they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by the Periquitos 5-3 on aggregate. Spanish midfielder Vicente Iborra was on target for the hosts in that 2-2 draw last weekend, scoring his first goal for the club – in just his fourth appearance – since joining from English Premier League outfit Leicester City in January.

Villarreal recent results: (all competitions)

03/02/2019 – Villarreal 2-2 Espanyol
26/01/2019 – Valencia 3-0 Villarreal
20/01/2019 – Villarreal 1-1 Bilbao
17/01/2019 – Espanyol 3-1 Villarreal (CDR)
12/01/2019 – Villarreal 1-2 Getafe

It certainly wont be an easy task for Villarreal on Friday who have only beaten Real Valladolid once on their own turf – in five matches in all competitions – since a 2-1 defeat in their first-ever meeting in the Copa del Rey back in January 2007.

That victory came nearly nine years ago, in April 2010, when Angel and Nilmar were on target for the visitors on an historic night for Villarreal.

The last time the sides faced off at the Estadio Jose Corrilla, in Valladolid’s ill-fated 2013/14 campaign, Jesus Rueda scored the only goal of the encounter to hand the hosts a 1-0 win.

It was the same scoreline when the two teams came together earlier this season – Leonardo Suarez’s second-half strike handing Valladolid their second successive 1-0 victory against Villarreal.
